““I was referred to Dr. Mantell and the fine people at WOA after being involved in a pretty serious mountain biking accident that left my right shoulder severely separated. Dr. Mantell and his team evaluated the situation and quickly created a plan to get me back on my bike as soon as possible. “I went to Dr. Mantell with a chronic pain in my shoulder. Initially we decided I ought to take a few months off weight lifting to give it a rest and see if it healed on it’s own. It didn’t heal so next we agreed to do a steroid injection which helped alleviate pain temporarily plus introduced PT. The pain slowly came back so we agreed surgery was the last option. I was scared, given 80%-ish success rate, but I went through with it and the surgery went very well. Everyone was professional, I came out of surgery in minor discomfort and given medication to lessen the discomfort. I was released quickly which was nice so I could rest in my own house. Nearly 3 weeks later, I’m raising my arm with very little discomfort. I’m still healing and doing PT rehab daily. I’m so hopeful to return to my favorite physical activities eventually! Dr. Mantell showed me actual photos of what the problems were and what he did. He has such great bedside manner. In each appointment he listened to me. I’m very grateful! “I saw Dr. Mantell in February ‘19 for a knee injury that ended up being a torn meniscus and severed ACL. I greatly appreciated the time he took to explain each treatment option & associated pros, cons, and recovery times. I opted for meniscus repair & ACL replacement. I had a relatively pain-free recovery, and was gratified to see minimal scarring. I went with the PT office affiliated with WOC, per Dr. Mantell’s recommendation, and I was also very happy with their services—very convenient that we’re able to share their notes with Dr. Mantell in real time, making post op follow-ups seamless. I’m 5 months out from the surgery (to the day!), and I’m running on a treadmill again with no issue. I highly recommend Dr. Mantell as an orthopedic surgeon; he’s skilled, pragmatic, and reassuring. “My surgery was an emergency surgery so I was unable to meet Dr Mantell until just before. As I waited, the nurses came in and told me not to worry, that Dr. Mantell was “worth the wait” and that eased the usual concerns one has before surgery. They told me his is a brilliant surgeon, very kind, cares for patients and takes all the time he needs and answers all their questions without seeming hurried. When he came I saw thees words of praise were absolutely true. Few surgeons take the time to talk with the patient and answer all questions and help the patient feel ready for surgery.
After surgery he came and again took the time to answer questions and to reassure me that all had gone well. I had no pain the next day and went home that night. Within a day or so at home I was off pain medicine for good in spite of a very mess fracture and serious surgery with metal plates and screws.
I have had several office visits with Dr Mantell and have been wonderfully satisfied with his care. I highly recommend him as a surgeon and also for his amazing patience and respect for and kindness to his patients. He earns my highest recommendation”

“Dr. Matthew Mantell performed a total, reversed replacement on my right shoulder in July 2019. He informed me that the need for the surgery was an exceptional amount of osteoarthritis in my right shoulder area. This was/is apparently endemic in my case, as a similar surgery was performed on my left shoulder in October 2017 by a Dr. Werner at the University of Virginia hospital.
In the case of Dr. Mantell’s surgery, all went well. The preparatory exams were simple and thorough. Dr. Mantel’s explanation of the procedure was clear and fully understandable. The post surgical treatment at the Winchester Medical Center was excellent. In-home physical therapy was well-conducted by Valley Health therapists. Out-patient physical therapy was also very well performed by the Winchester Orthopedic Associates physical therapy department.
I have recovered almost completely, but I leave the technical elements of the extent of my recovery to Dr. Mantell. I am essentially pain free and have been so since my discharge from the hospital. I have not needed to use the prescribed pain-relief medication (Oxycodone) at all. I am quite grateful for the excellent service and support I have received from Dr. Mantell and the staff of the Winchester Orthopedic Associates practice since 2004.”

“I had a torn rotator cuff that was unsuccessfully operated on twice. Dr. Mantell was correct that the solution was a reverse shoulder replacement. I had the replacement surgery, and everything was really smooth including my night in the hospital, which was actually nice and very comfortable. Woke up in the morning and Dr. Mantell was there himself to check on me, not a PA.
