Dr. Mantell’s approach towards patient care centers on a personalized, educated, shared decision-making process. As a doctor, he believes education about a particular condition is just as important as treatment. Dr. Mantell takes the necessary time to make sure each patient gains a clear understanding of their symptoms, as well as provide written materials and handouts about their pathology.

The goal for most patients is to rule out other non-operative alternatives before resorting to surgical options. Some of these include activity modifications, physical therapy, bracing, injections or other biologic treatments. However, if surgery is required for the problem Dr. Mantell will make sure to educate the individual patient about all the risks and benefits, as well as other alternatives to surgery so a shared decision can be made with the patient in regards to the best course of treatment.

Although surgery should be a last resort, with the improvement of advanced arthroscopic techniques and technology, patients have been able to return to their normal daily activities and sports in ways that could not be achieved in the past. Whether you are a young athlete or an older active adult, Dr Mantell is committed to helping patients get back to sports and activities effectively, safety, and as quickly as possible.

Dr. Mantell’s preferred treatment is preservation. That includes preservation of your native joint instead of replacement, if feasible. There are a number of cutting edge non-operative treatments such as PRP and stem cells that may be effective in certain circumstances. Certain joint conditions may be amenable to minimally invasive innovative joint preserving arthroscopic techniques and cartilage restoration options. However, if arthritis has progressed to a certain point, Dr Mantell may advocate for joint replacement.
